Retaining Wall FAQs

Common questions about our retaining wall services on the Kapiti Coast.

How much does a retaining wall cost on the Kapiti Coast?
Costs depend on the wall height, length, material, site access and whether engineering or consent is required. As a rough guide, a simple timber sleeper wall under 1 metre might start from around $300-$500 per lineal metre, while engineered concrete block walls over 1.5 metres can be significantly more. Every site is different - the best way to get an accurate price is to book a free consultation so we can assess your specific situation.
What type of retaining wall is best for my property?
It depends on the height, purpose and look you're after. Timber pole and sleeper walls are the most cost-effective for lower walls and garden terracing. Concrete block systems are stronger and better suited for taller walls or where heavy loads are involved. Gabion baskets filled with rock give a natural, contemporary look and handle drainage well. We'll assess your site and recommend the best option for your specific conditions and budget.
How long does it take to build a retaining wall?
Most residential retaining walls take 1-2 weeks depending on the height, length and complexity. A simple garden wall might take 3-5 days, while a large tiered system with drainage, stairs and consent requirements can take 2-3 weeks. Weather and ground conditions also play a part. We'll give you a realistic timeline in your quote.
Do I need a building consent for a retaining wall?
Under the NZ Building Code, retaining walls over 1.5 metres in height generally require building consent from the Kapiti Coast District Council. Walls that carry additional loads (such as supporting a driveway or building) may also need consent regardless of height. We're experienced with the consent process and can manage it for you - including engaging a structural engineer where required. We'll advise you upfront during the quoting process.
Why is drainage so important for retaining walls?
Drainage is the single most important factor in retaining wall performance. Water pressure behind a wall is the number one cause of failure. Every retaining wall we build includes a proper drainage system - ag pipe along the base, geotextile fabric to prevent soil clogging the drain, and drainage metal behind the wall to direct water away. Without correct drainage, even a well-built wall will eventually lean, crack or fail.
