Decking FAQs

Common questions about our decking services on the Kapiti Coast.

How much does a new deck cost on the Kapiti Coast?
Costs vary depending on the size, material, height off the ground and complexity of the build. As a rough guide, a standard treated pine deck starts from around $250–$400 per square metre, with hardwood and composite options costing more. The best way to get an accurate price is to book a free consultation — we'll measure up and quote based on your specific project.
What's the difference between timber and composite decking?
Timber is the most common and cost-effective option — treated pine, macrocarpa and hardwoods all work well but require regular staining or oiling. Composite decking (such as Millboard) costs more upfront but is virtually maintenance-free and handles salt air, UV and moisture without staining. We'll help you weigh up both during your consultation.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most standard residential decks take 5–10 working days depending on the size, height and complexity. Larger or multi-level decks with stairs, balustrades and built-in seating can take 2–3 weeks. We'll give you a realistic timeline in your quote.
Do I need a building consent for a deck?
Decks under 1.5 metres above ground level generally don't require building consent under the NZ Building Code. However, decks higher than 1.5 metres, decks attached to the house structure, or those with covered roofing may need consent. We'll advise you during the quoting process and can help manage consent if needed.
How do I maintain my deck in Kapiti's coastal conditions?
For timber decks, we recommend a wash and restain every 12–18 months to protect against UV, moisture and salt air. Keep the surface clear of leaves and debris to prevent moisture buildup. Composite decking just needs an occasional wash with soapy water — no staining required. We'll give you full care instructions at handover.
